By Proxy - Katy Regnery

I read this book a few weeks ago, as part of the Blog Tours initiative. My opinion is a little late, but I had a few problems this week. I hope the author and the other bloggers will forgive me. 

This story is based in a very peculiar and rare situation, the double proxy, gone wrong. The proxy wedding that was supposed to happen on Friday afternoon can only take place on Monday morning, and Jenny, the small town girl, and Sam, the big city boy, are stuck with each other for the weekend. 

This book is a pleasant read - which would have been a lot nicer closer to Christmas! The writing is good and the setting is sweet. You can feel the cold outside and the warmth inside the houses and in people. Jenny and Sam are both lovable characters with strong personalities and their own reasons to act as they do. Some of the other characters are delightful as well, especially her brothers... In fact, I would have liked to see more of them, because their interactions were the best! The author writes very nice dialogues and fun situations. 

I liked almost all the interactions between the couple. There is a particular one involving eggs that was quite fun! Some things, though, I didn't like so much. The insta-love, for example. They had one weekend together and they fell completely in love. In fact, they met on Friday, and by Saturday, they were already sighing for each other. By Monday, there were tears at the fake wedding... I would have accepted passion, and the desire to know each other more, but all that love? Not so much, it's to quick and certain. Also, I would have preferred to see more dialogues and more moments between them, and less wondering. They think too much... and repeat themselves. And I don't like when Jenny is judgmental about the drinking, when he is not described as a heavy drinker... None of it ruins the book, but it would be much better with more dialogue, more of her family and friends, and less self-questioning.

Also, I like the descriptions of life in the small town, it seems wonderful. But I don't particularly like the defense of the "perfect" small town and the wonderful small town girl(s) as compared to the big bad city, and all those slutty big city girls. I buy Sam's futile ex-girlfriend, but not the concept that most city girls are the same. The book would have sounded a lot truer (and Sam's decision too) if the city were, as it is, a place both good and bad - grey, instead of black and white.

Inspite of these (a bit annoying) aspects, the book is a lovely read, an I will probably be reading the next books, to find out how things turn out with some other lovely characters.

Li este livro há algumas semanas, inserido na iniciativa Blog Tours. A minha opinião está um pouco atrasada, mas tive alguns problemas esta semana. Espero que a autora e as outras bloguers me desculpem.

A história baseia-se numa situação peculiar e rara, o double proxy, que aqui corre mal. O casamento por procuração que devia acontecer numa Sexta feira à tarde fica adiado para Segunda de manhã, e Jenny, a rapariga da cidade pequena, e Sam, o rapaz da cidade grande, têm que aturar-se durante o fim de semana.

Trata-se de uma leitura agrdável - que seria ainda mais simpática perto do Natal! A escrita é boa, e o cenário simpático. Podemos sentir o frio lá fora e o calor nas casas e nas pessoas. A Jenny e o Sam são personagens adoráveis com personalidades fortes e motivações próprias. Algumas das outras personagens também são encantadoras, em especial os irmãos de Jenny... Na verdade, gostaria de ter visto mais deles, porque as suas interações foram as melhores partes do livro. A autora escreve bons diálogos e situações engraçadas.

Gostei de quase todas as interações enter o casal. Houve uma em particular, envolvendo ovos, que foi bastante divertida. De outras coisas, porém, não gostei tanto. O insta-love, por exemplo. Um fim de semana juntos e apaixonaram-se completamente. Aliás, conheceram-se na sexta e, no Sábado, já suspiravam um pelo outro. Na Segunda, houve lágrimas no falso casamento... Aceitava paixão, o desejo de se conhecerem melhor, mas tanto amor? Nem por isso, assim tão rápido e cheio de certezas. Para além disso, gostaria de ter visto mais diálogos e momentos entre eles, e menos instrospeção. Pensam demasiado... e repetem-se. E não gosto quando a Jenny faz juízos de valor sobre a bebida, quando ele não é descrito como um grande bebedor... Nada disto estraga o livro, mas seria melhor com mais diálogo, família e amigos, e menos dúvidas.

Também gosto das descrições da cidadezinhas, mas não da oposição entre a cidadezinha perfeita, com as raparigas perfeitas, e a feroz cidade grande, com as suas mulheres mal comportadas. Aceito bem a ex-namorada fútil de Sam, mas não que todas o sejam! O livro (e a decisão de Sam) soaríam mais autênticas sea cidade fosse, como é, uma área cinzenta, em vez do preto e branco.

Apesar destes aspectos (um pouco enervantes), o livro é uma leitura agradável. Provavelmente lerei os restantes, para saber o que acontece às outras personagens!
